A 4 p.m. call brought of a possible shooting and man with a gun brought township police to the single-family home on Churchill Road on Sunday.
"The responding officers attempted to get the man to exit his residence, but he refused to do so," Deputy Police Chief John Faggello said. "It was quickly determined that law enforcement was dealing with a barricaded subject-type situation.
"Within minutes, responding officers arrived on scene and began a dialogue with the male resident who was apparently experiencing some type of medical condition and presenting with an altered mental state," the deputy chief said.
A Bergen County Regional SWAT Team was summoned. New Jersey State Police responded, as well.
Family members were safely removed from the house and portions of several streets were closed during negotiations, responders said.
"At approximately 7:00 p.m. and after a couple of hours of failing to coax the resident from his home by negotiation, the Bergen County SWAT team made entry to the home and was able to safely and successfully secure the male resident," Faggello said.
"A sweep of the residence didn’t reveal any victims of a shooting, any evidence of a firearm being discharged, or any firearms," he added.
The man was taken to an area medical center for treatment, the deputy chief said.
